Government Sub-Committee

In an effort to address the unique interests of women in the public sector, the OWBA established the Government Subcommittee (“GS”). Aggressively being spearheaded under new leadership in 2015, GS seeks to promote advancement and leadership opportunities for women working in both government and government relations positions. By offering meaningful networking and educational (CLE) opportunities catered to its members, GS empowers women who seek to advance their careers in government.

GS membership is free and open to all public sector members employed by federal, state county and municipal agencies within Ohio; as well as private sector members practicing in Government Relations.

Government Subcommittee Events:

In planning its events, GS seeks to create meaningful platforms by which judges and attorneys can connect, educate and support one another professionally. The subcommittee also prides itself in hosting events through which members can give back to students, the legal community, and community-at-large.

The “Honoring Women in Government” Reception officially kicked off the Government Subcommittee’s creation in May 2015 featuring Key Speakers Hon. Betty Montgomery and the Hon. Judith French. Since then, this has become an annual event that is widely attended by judges and government/government-relations attorneys from across the state.

Save the Date! The 2017 Honoring Women in Government Reception will be at the Nationwide Hotel & Conference Center on Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 PM, in accordance with the Annual Meeting & Conference. We are pleased to announce that this year's Key Speaker is Justice Sharon L. Kennedy, Supreme Court of Ohio.

The subcommittee hosted an interagency clothing/product drive and charitable fundraiser, to benefit Dress for Success in Columbus. Dress for Success empowers local women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the career development tools they need to thrive in work and in life. Through the cooperation of over a dozen local government agencies and firms in Columbus and Dayton, the drive successfully collected over 1200+ professional clothing and product donations which were gifted to empower disadvantaged, but deserving women throughout Ohio. Participating firms and agencies included: Barnes & Thornberg LLP, Bricker & Eckler LLP, Ice Miller LLP, Littler Mendelson P.C., Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP, Squire Patton Boggs, Freund Freeze & Arnold, The Ohio State University, Franklin County Job & Family Services, Office of the Ohio Attorney General, Ohio Civil Rights Commission, Ohio Department of Medicaid, and Ohio Public Defender.

To further the education of Ohio’s attorneys, the Government Subcommittee recently hosted a Statewide Professionalism CLE Event, “Public and Private Partnerships,” which educated attorneys in Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo on issues of Diversity & Inclusion, Private/Public Partnerships, and Health & Wellbeing for Attorneys. This event was generously sponsored by Ice Miller LLP in Columbus, Taft, Stettinius and Hollister in Cincinnati, and Shumaker Loop and Kendrick and their Leadership Initiative.

In November 2015, Ohio State University Moritz College of Law hosted law school students interested in government or government relations practice and a smattering of local lady  lawyers and leaders. NBC4’s Colleen Marshall, graciously emceed this event which featured key speakers, Hon. Evelyn Stratton and Maria Armstrong of Bricker & Eckler LLP.

The purpose of this event was to encourage and inspire 1L and 2Ls considering careers in government/government-relations; expose students to different career possibilities; and provide students with an opportunity to network with representatives from 25 major government agencies and premier firms. View slideshow on Picasa
