The Qui Tam Section of the Federal Bar Association is hosting a CLE in the Southern District of Ohio on October 10, 2017. The False Claims Act (FCA) imposes liability on persons and companies who defraud governmental programs. It is the federal Government's primary litigation tool in combating fraud against the government. The law includes a qui tam provision that allows people who are not affiliated with the government to file actions on behalf of the government (informally called “whistleblowing”).

The number of False Claims Act cases filed in the U.S. is increasing. In fiscal 2015, the U.S. Department of Justice recovered more than $3.5 billion in civil settlements and judgments under the FCA—most arising from complaints filed by whistleblowers, who received almost $600 million in rewards during the same period.

The Cincinnati program will provide an overview of the False Claims Act; a discussion of relevant Supreme Court cases, practice tips, recent developments in the Ninth Circuit, and a panel discussion to provide diverse perspectives on FCA practice.
